Ohio State is paying interim Coach Luke Fickell $775,000 for guiding the football program through a season of suspensions, NCAA investigations and looming penalties.
The contract, released by the university Thursday, makes it very clear that Fickell is not guaranteed a job after the agreement ends Jan. 31, 2012.
"This agreement is renewable solely upon an offer from Ohio State and an acceptance by coach," the contract stipulates in section 2.0 under Term. "This agreement in no way grants coach a claim to tenure in employment."
Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith, who did not immediately return a call requesting comment, has said Fickell will be a candidate for the permanent job but that the school will conduct a nationwide search to find its next head coach. Rumors of potential candidates have been circulating since Jim Tressel was forced to resign.
Fickell's base salary is $400,000, and he is paid $200,000 for media obligations and $175,000 from Ohio State's agreement with Nike. Tressel made more than $3.5 million last year.

The Big Ten Conference suspended Michigan State defensive end William Gholston for Saturday's game against No. 4 Wisconsin after he threw a punch at a Michigan player last weekend. The 15th-ranked Spartans beat Michigan, 28-14, on Saturday. Gholston was shown on video appearing to twist the helmet of Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson during a pileup. He was also shown taking a swing at a Michigan lineman on another play, appearing to connect with his face or neck. ? The Southwestern Athletic Conference suspended 41 players for at least one game after a postgame fight between Southern and Arkansas Pine Bluff. The league announced the suspensions ? 25 Pine Bluff players and 16 from Southern ? and undisclosed fines against the universities Thursday. Most of the suspensions were for one game, but eight players will sit out two for using "excessive force," the league said. The fight broke out after Southern scored on the final play and Pine Bluff blocked the extra point to preserve a 22-21 win. ? North Carolina senior kicker Casey Barth won't play again this year and will pursue a medical redshirt to return in 2012.
