Associated Press
New Mexico hired former Notre Dame coach Bob Davie to lead its troubled football program.

Paul Krebs, the school's vice president of athletics, announced the appointment Wednesday. New Mexico scheduled a news conference for Thursday to introduce Davie, who will become the football team's 31st head coach.

Davie has not coached since he was fired by Notre Dame in 2001. During his five years as the Fighting Irish's coach, he was 35-25. He led the team to three bowl games, all losses.

Although Davie's teams did well academically, the Irish were put on NCAA probation for the first time under Davie as the result of a relationship between Irish players and a booster that started under Lou Holtz and continued under Davie. They also produced no first-team All-Americans and only one first-round draft pick, Luke Petitgout.

New Mexico officials declined to comment further on Davie's hiring until the news conference.

Davie will be leaving his position as a college football analyst for ESPN. Before he was hired as the coach at Notre Dame in 1996, he spent 20 years as an assistant, including three years as Notre Dame's defensive coordinator and nine at Texas A&M.

At New Mexico, Davie will replace Mike Locksley, who was fired at midseason after a tenure of nearly three years that was mostly marked by losses and off-field problems.

Big East sets sights on Brigham Young

A person with knowledge of the conference's expansion plans told the Associated Press that Big East officials have made adding Brigham Young a priority as they try to build a 12-team football conference.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because negotiations were supposed to remain confidential.

BYU is in its first season as football independent. If it moves to the Big East, it would be for football only. The school's other teams play in the West Coast Conference.

The Big East is close to adding as many as seven members, including Boise State, Air Force and Navy for football only, and Southern Methodist, Houston and Central Florida in all sports.

Etc.

Vanderbilt suspended safety Andre Simmons indefinitely. The sophomore was charged with two felonies after being accused of trying to rob a fellow student in his dorm room. Simmons was being held on $100,000 bond after being charged with aggravated robbery and especially aggravated burglary, a Class B felony.
