Doug Martin rushed for 151 yards and returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown as No. 8 Boise State routed Arizona State, 56-24, Thursday night in the Maaco Bowl at Las Vegas.
The Sun Devils (6-7) never seriously threatened the Broncos (12-1), even though Boise State had three turnovers and gave up a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to start the second half.
Arizona State missed on several opportunities to make the score closer, wasting a 241-yard receiving effort by Gerell Robinson, who caught a touchdown in the fourth quarter after the Broncos had already scored 49 points.
Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore ? the NCAA's winningest player at the position ? played well enough in his last college game to keep his team scoring despite some missteps. He finished with 266 yards and two touchdowns, plus two interceptions and a fumble in a game that capped his college career with 50 wins.
Martin finished with 301 all-purpose yards, breaking a bowl record set in 1997 by Air Force's Pat Johnson. His touchdown return also set a record for the longest kickoff return in MAACO Bowl history.
The most costly mistake for Arizona State came in the third quarter, as the Sun Devils tried to capitalize a fumble by Moore ? his third turnover of the game. The Sun Devils drove 49 yards to Boise State's one-yard line, but quarterback Brock Osweiler's fourth-down pass was intercepted by Jamar Taylor, who returned it for a touchdown to make the score 35-10.
Texas A&M player dies
Texas A&M senior offensive lineman Joseph Villavisencio was killed in a car accident, according to the university.
According to witness reports, Villavisencio swerved to avoid a buzzard and veered head-on into the path of an 18-wheeler near the town of Normangee, about 40 miles from College Station, on Thursday.
Villavisencio spent part of Thursday with the team delivering gifts to families at a local shelter after the Aggies finished their last workout on campus in preparation for the Meineke Car Care Bowl. Villavisencio was heading to his home in Jacksonville, Texas, at the time of the crash.
Crist, Heaps head to Kansas
Kansas Coach Charlie Weis has landed two high-profile quarterbacks.
Former top recruit Dayne Crist announced on Twitter that he plans to join the Jayhawks for his senior season after a checkered career at Notre Dame. Shortly afterward, news broke that Brigham Young quarterback Jake Heaps also will transfer to Kansas.
Crist will reunite with Weis, who recruited him to Notre Dame, and be eligible to play next season because he has graduated from Notre Dame. Heaps will have to sit out under NCAA transfer rules but will have two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Crist visited Kansas and Wisconsin before making his decision, which came the same day Badgers offensive coordinator Paul Chryst was hired as the head coach at Pittsburgh.
One of the nation's top recruits out of Notre Dame High in Sherman Oaks, Crist enrolled in South Bend, Ind., in 2008 as part of a blockbuster recruiting class. Things didn't pan out as anybody expected, though.
Weis struggled to win games despite suiting up numerous top prospects at Notre Dame, and was fired after the 2009 season. Crist had a season-ending knee injury his freshman year and another last year, after he completed 60% of his passes for 2,033 yards with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions under Weis' replacement, Brian Kelly.
He came back from the injury to regain the starting job this season, but was benched at halftime of the opener against South Florida. Crist played only a handful of snaps behind Tommy Rees the rest of the way, ultimately announcing that he had decided to transfer.
Heaps was just as highly touted as Crist coming out of Sammamish (Wash.) Skyline High School. He was rated by Rivals.com as the No. 1 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2010.
Heaps graduated early so he could enroll at BYU, and he started the final 10 games his first season, setting freshman school records for yards passing (2,316), attempts (383), completions (219) and touchdown passes (15). The Cougars finished 7-6 and beat Texas El Paso in the New Mexico Bowl.
He struggled early this season, though, and lost the starting job to Riley Nelson. Heaps asked BYU Coach Bronco Mendenhall to be released from his scholarship this month.

School President Rodney Erickson and Joyner had both said they hoped to have a new coach before No. 24 Penn State's bowl game. But Thursday, Joyner said a new coach would be introduced "at the appropriate time," and the statement offered no specific timeline.Etc.
