From the moment the NCAA penalized the USC football program, taking away 30 scholarships over three years, Trojans coach Lane Kiffin talked about "maximizing" the rides he had available.

He and his staff appear to have done that in the first year of scholarship reductions.

USC signed only 12 players Wednesday but had the highest per-player star rating (4.07) of any school, according to Rivals.com.

The Trojans also added five midyear enrollees who count against their 2011 scholarship total, bringing their 2012 haul to 17 players.
