In their Pac-12 opener, the Bruins made quick work of the Trojans at Dodger Stadium, winning by a score of 7-2 and snapping USC's five-game winning streak.
USC's only earned run came in the third inning, when sophomore shortstop James Roberts hit an off-the-wall double and was brought in two hitters later by freshman outfielder Garrett Stubbs on an RBI single. But after that, it was all Bruins as they drove in seven unanswered runs, two of them from USC fielding errors and one from a solo home run by sophomore Kevin Williams. UCLA junior Trevor Brown was the player of the game with 2 runs, 2 doubles, and 2 RBI.
On the mound, UCLA's ace freshman Grant Watson snuffed out USC's rallies and improved his win-loss record to 4-0 with five strikeouts and one run and seven hits allowed. Brandon Garcia pitched four innings and took the loss for USC, with four hits and three runs allowed, two of them earned. Garcia's record is now 1-2. The second run for USC was walked in by UCLA reliever Scott Griggs in the ninth.
USC now falls to 12-4 on the season, and 2-3 against top 25 opponents. That record will expand immensely, as the Trojans prepare to take on several top 25 teams in Pac-12 play, including Stanford, Cal, Oregon, Oregon State, and the sanctioned but still formidable Arizona State. Next up, USC will try to build on their 10-0 home record with a three game series this weekend at Dedeaux Field against Utah.
