LOS ANGELES ? Through two weeks of training camp, quarterback Kevin Prince has taken all but a handful of snaps with the first team. It might be the most telling of many signs that Coach Rick Neuheisel is leaning toward designating Prince over Richard Brehaut as UCLA's starting quarterback.
Neuheisel seemed to offer another sign Friday. When asked if the two were even, Neuheisel, who on most days has said Brehaut outplayed the admittedly slumping Prince, was coy.
"They're both getting better," Neuheisel said. "I'm not calling a horse race. I'm not Trevor Denman. It's the best I've seen from both of them."
Neuheisel said he had no concrete plans when he will announce a starter, but he intimated it will come after UCLA scrimmages at the Rose Bowl next Friday.
UCLA will first close training camp with a scrimmage Saturday. Prince and Brehaut are slated to get equal snaps, though Neuheisel cautioned that the first team will not see much action and the offensive and defensive packages will be basic.
"Things are more public with an open scrimmage, so you're careful with all your stuff," Neuheisel said.
UCLA practiced in shorts Friday morning and had a closed walk-through in the afternoon. Prince saw an increased workload a day after being limited by a blister on his throwing hand.
"He's starting to understand we got to get him to pull the trigger," Neuheisel said of Prince. "We got to get Richard, when he feels the pressure, to get up in the pocket and not get lost in the sexy throw. Just take what they're giving you."
Prince said his goal for the scrimmage is to create separation between him and Brehaut, but that he's not trying to win the job in one practice.
"I don't think it (the scrimmage) is the end-all, be-all to name a starter," Prince said. "I'm not going to put too much pressure on it. I'll try to keep my cool and relax and play like I know how to play."
Brehaut echoed Prince's sentiments.
"As a competitor, I think every afternoon should be an afternoon you mark your calendar," he said. "I don't think I should try to play any harder than I try to play every single day out here. Saturday is just going to be another day."
NOTES
Neuheisel said the scrimmage will consist of 60-75 plays. He said freshman quarterback Brett Hundley is scheduled to return Monday, but likely won't be at full speed. Hundley had minor knee surgery in late July. ...
The scrimmage begins at 5 p.m. and will be held on campus at Drake Stadium. It is free to the public.
