LOS ANGELES ? UCLA might have lost another projected starter on the offensive line to injury.
Offensive guard Chris Ward limped off the Drake Stadium grass Tuesday and was carted away after suffering a sprained right ankle. X-rays were normal and he is listed as day-to-day.
The sophomore had worked his way back to the first team this week, after mostly working behind Greg Capella and Albert Cid last week. Ward rolled the ankle during a drill while preparing to engage with a defender.
"I don't think (the injury) is that serious," Coach Rick Neuheisel said.
The 6-4, 330-pound lineman from Mater Dei saw significant action in reserve last year as a freshman. Losing Ward could be a serious blow to UCLA, which has been scrambling to find an eight-man rotation.
The guard position has been in constant flux since Jeff Baca broke his left ankle in spring.
UCLA is replacing its entire trio up the middle. Maiava, a senior, missed all of last season because of a broken ankle. Capella, a sophomore, was a reserve center until this fall. Cid, also a sophomore, joined the team just two weeks ago after transferring from Citrus College.
INJURY REPORT
It was a mere coincidence that a handful of NFL scouts were in attendance Tuesday and senior safety Tony Dye, who is included on a handful of preseason watch lists, practiced at full speed for the first time in almost two weeks.
But Dye asserted he was not watching scouts watching him.
"It's just like when you're in high school and being recruited for college," Dye said. "You can't pay attention to that. That's not my focus. I want to win games here. It's an honor, but whether they're watching me or not, I'm just trying to win."
Dye has missed most of fall because of tightness in his groin muscle. Tevin McDonald just returned from a bum ankle Monday.
Safety Alex Mascarenas returned Tuesday in a no-contact jersey and Dalton Hilliard has been limited this week.
QB competition
Quarterbacks Richard Brehaut and Kevin Prince split the first-team snaps for the second consecutive practice. Neuheisel continued to be coy when asked where the two stand in their battle for the starting job.
"We're going to continue to evaluate," Neuheisel said. "The fact that they're pushing to be the starting quarterback is making them both better."
