Los Angeles ? UCLA junior guard De'End Parker will not play again this season and is expected to transfer to school closer to the Bay Area, Bruins coach Ben Howland said Tuesday.
Parker, a native of Daly City and former City College of San Francisco standout, played in UCLA's first two games, starting against Middle Tennessee State on Nov. 15, but has not played since then because of a knee injury.
Parker has spent much of the past month in the San Francisco area taking care of his mother Carmen Johnson, who is suffering from heart problems.
"She needs someone to take care of her. That's something that's been weighing heavily on his heart so I'm supportive," Howland said referring to Parker's plans to transfer.
Parker plans to petition the NCAA for an additional year of eligibility.
"We're going to help him with the petition," Howland said.
No Pac-12
For seventh consecutive week not a single Pac-12 team appears in either The Associated Press or ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top 25s. The conference has only one team in the top 50 spots in the most recent NCAA RPI (Cal at No. 40) and the league has half its teams coming in at between No. 125 (UCLA) and No. 258 (Utah) in the ratings.
In yet another sign of just how weak the Pac-12 is this season not a single conference player made the cut for the John R. Wooden Award's list of Top 25 candidates released Tuesday.
The Missouri Valley, MAAC, Big West and Big Sky conferences all have players on the list.
The closest the league that bills itself as the "Conference of Champions" gets to making the list is UNLV sophomore forward Mike Moser. Moser transferred from UCLA over concerns about playing time. He is averaging 13.9 points and 11.2 rebounds per game for the No. 14 Runnin' Rebels.
