LOS ANGELES ? On Monday night, quarterback Richard Brehaut looked at his left foot, which was in more pain than he could ever remember, and he wondered, "What if it's broken?"

Three days later, after X-rays did not reveal a break and his injury was deemed a sprain, Brehaut returned to practice and showed no rust from his brief layoff. The junior said he felt no pain Thursday and will compete in Saturday's scrimmage.

"My foot hasn't bothered me at all," Brehaut said. "I'm perfectly 100 percent again. I felt like today I proved I didn't miss a beat at all. I had some questions, if my accuracy was going to be there. But I felt comfortable."

Coach Rick Neuheisel added: "Sharp. He's had a great camp."

With fellow quarterback Kevin Prince limited by a blister on his throwing hand, Thursday perhaps marked another step forward for Brehaut in the race for the starting job.

"I feel like I've had my best camp to date, my best series of practices," Brehaut said. "I feel like I've put myself in a great position to make a very, very tough call for Coach Neuheiusel."

Prince said he felt mild pain and a small infection had begun to surface, but the injury is something he can play through. More concerning to Neuheisel was the redshirt junior's confidence.

"Coach Neuheisel came up to me and asked me how my confidence was (Tuesday)," said Prince, who has responded with two better days of practice. "It was never a confidence thing. I knew I could do it. It was just a matter of making it happen. My confidence was never shot."

NOTES

Neuheisel said he rested most of the first team Thursday to keep it fresh for the scrimmage.
